Bangladesh suffers from the most severe case of arsenic poisoning in the world. Over 70% of the 7 million tube wells in the country contain arsenic. Addressing the arsenic crisis continues to be an important commitment of the Bangladesh Government. Therefore, in support of the governments development and health objectives SIM Bangladesh began the Arsenic Poisoning and Prevention Program (APPP) in 2001. The program began in Kushtia, then expanded into Rajbari and now works in 4 Upazilla’s in Faridpur District.
The vision of SIM Bangladesh’s APP Program is “everyone drinking water fit for life”. To achieve this vision the program has four areas of work:
- Awareness Raising of the dangers of arsenic,
- Tubewell Water testing for arsenic concentration,
- A remedial solution by way of a Household Arsenic Removal Filter, and
- Arsenicosis Patient Treatment Program.
